I have a really simple hair oil recipe you can make to nourish your hair and keep it healthy plus it only takes two ingredients!
I really don’t like putting chemicals on my skin or hair. As you know everything you put on your body is absorbed into your skin and bloodstream. Which in my opinion, after a while the chemicals building up in your body can lead to health issues.
The winter season always seems to make my hair dry and flyaway. This recipe uses fresh or dried rosemary and olive oil. If you have dark hair with some gray hair, using this oil twice a week will help cover those gray hairs plus invigorate hair growth! For light hair use chamomile instead of rosemary. The chamomile can brighten your hair. Pretty cool, huh!
The cold infusion method takes 6 weeks to infuse, but you can make a hot infusion that only takes a few hours. Honestly, I do not have the patience to wait weeks when I can make this oil in a few hours!
Hair Oil Cold Infusion Method
Ingredients
- Clean glass jar with lid
- Fresh/dried rosemary for dark hair OR chamomile for light hair
- Olive oil
- Chopstick
- Measuring cup
- Cheesecloth
- Rubber band
Directions full
- Coarsely chop fresh or dried rosemary or chamomile.
- Fill the jar about halfway full with the herb and then add olive oil, covering the herb and filling to the top of the jar.
- Use the chopstick to poke down into the herb and oil to release any air bubbles then cap the jar.
- Label the jar with the herb, oil, date made and the date it’s ready (6 weeks later) on a piece of tape and attach to the jar.
- Place the jar in a dark cabinet and shake every day for 2 weeks ensuring the oil and herb are mixed. After 6 weeks your oil is ready to use.
Strain Your Oil
Now it’s time to strain your oil.
- Take a large measuring cup and place a large piece of cheesecloth over the measuring cup, secure with the rubber band making a pocket in the cheesecloth.
- Slowly pour your oil through the cheesecloth letting the oil drain into the measuring cup.
- Once the oil is drained, take the cheesecloth and herb and squeeze any extra oil into the measuring cup.
- Discard the herb in the compost.
- Pour your finished oil into a squeeze container and its ready to use.

How To Use
To use your hair oil, apply a small amount in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together then apply to damp hair. Cover your hair in a plastic bag or shower cap, then wrap in a towel to hold the heat in. Let the oil soak into your hair for 30 – 60 minutes. Then wash as usual. In the winter, I typically use this hair oil once a week to combat the drier air.
You now have a chemical-free hair oil for soft, healthy, manageable hair. This oil will keep for up to a year. I can really feel and see a difference in my hair since using this homemade hair oil.
