Informative and Useful Herbal Books For Your Home Apothecary

Over the years I’ve read many herbal books and own a few bookcases of herbal books which I refer to on a regular basis. You can never have too many herbal books in my opinion!  To me, nothing beats having books on hand that I can refer to easily for the information I’m looking for. These are just a few books of the many excellent books available and in my ever-growing collection of herbal books.

Healing Wise by Susun Weed. I really enjoy her books. Susun is the voice of the Wise Woman tradition, where healing is nourishing not curing or fixing. In this book, she covers seven herbs and encourages us to get to know these Green Allies by spending time with them. This to me sets the foundation on how to know each plant you come into contact with. There are detailed instructions for herbal preparations such as infusions, tinctures, oils, and poultices. I find her knowledge invaluable and her book is very good for aspiring herbalists.

Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health by Rosemary Gladstar. I love this book because she provides 175 recipes which are time-tested natural therapies and herbal remedies that are easy to use and safe enough for children. She guides readers every step of the way, from the growing and ecologically sound harvesting of herbs, to basic preparations and applications.  I find this book very helpful, there are sections for children, women, men, and elders.

The Complete Herbs Sourcebook by David Hoffmann. This book is so helpful to every herbalist. He gives a clear explanation of the body’s systems and the herbs traditionally associated with them. He also goes through the ways to gather and prepare herbs that benefit all parts of the body, from the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems to the skin, ears, nose, throat, and eyes.

Botany in a Day by Thomas J. Elpel. Do you like to go for walks in local parks or wilderness preserves and are curious about all the plants that cross your path? If you’re a budding botanist, you’ll love this book. It teaches you how to quickly identify plant families by knowing certain patterns and traits.

Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients into Foods and Remedies That Heal by Rosalee de la Foret. In this book, Rosalee shows you how to incorporate common herbs into daily life. You can make natural remedies, personal care products, and healthy culinary dishes. I really like making the culinary recipes as I can incorporate healing herbs into our everyday meals without anyone knowing how healthy the meals are!

In the next post, I’ll list foraging books to help you with your herbal studies. There are so many books to list! What are some of your favorite books? Let me know in the comments below.
